About Summit Scanner

Summit Scanner Insights is built from the real pricing and duration data Summit Scanner collects across hundreds of trekking and expedition operators worldwide. This comparison looks at advertised trips on four major Nepalese circuits — Annapurna, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri and Kanchenjunga — and what their prices and typical itineraries can tell you about each journey.

The Story

Unlike a Base Camp trek, where the destination is usually a particular point beneath a mountain, a Circuit trek is all about the journey around a mountain or mountain range. The result can be a much more varied experience, crossing high passes, moving between valleys and experiencing landscapes that change dramatically from one side of a massif to another.

From the famous Annapurna Circuit to the remote trails of Dhaulagiri and Kanchenjunga, there is also a significant difference in the time and money required.

We compared advertised trips across four major Circuit treks: Annapurna, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri and Kanchenjunga.

How Long Does a Circuit Trek Take?

Annapurna and Manaslu share a typical duration of around 15 days, making them the shorter of the four Circuit treks compared.

Annapurna itineraries range considerably, from around 6 to 24 days. This reflects the variety of ways the route can be tackled, from shortened itineraries to more comprehensive journeys.

Manaslu shows similar flexibility, with advertised itineraries ranging from approximately 8 to 23 days.

The bigger commitments are Dhaulagiri and Kanchenjunga. Dhaulagiri has a typical duration of around 20 days, while Kanchenjunga rises to approximately 23 days, making it the longest typical Circuit trek of the four.

The difference is substantial. Choosing Kanchenjunga over a typical Annapurna or Manaslu itinerary means allowing for roughly another week in the mountains.

How Much Do Circuit Treks Cost?

The differences become even clearer when comparing advertised USD prices.

Circuit Treks at a Glance

CircuitTypical durationAdvertised price rangeMedian price
Annapurna15 days$650–$3,160$1,197
Manaslu15 days$228–$3,050$1,397
Dhaulagiri20 days$1,745–$4,500$2,425
Kanchenjunga23 days$2,100–$3,950$2,494

Annapurna Circuit combines a typical 15-day itinerary with the lowest median advertised price, at around $1,197. Manaslu Circuit requires a similar amount of time but has a slightly higher median of approximately $1,397.

Moving towards the more remote circuits brings a noticeable jump in both duration and price. Dhaulagiri Circuit typically requires around 20 days and has a median advertised price of $2,425, while Kanchenjunga Circuit is the longest and has the highest median at approximately $2,494.

The broad pattern is clear: the more remote circuits generally require more time and carry higher advertised prices, reflecting the greater logistical demands involved.

The difference between the two ends of the comparison is significant. The median advertised price for Kanchenjunga is more than twice that of Annapurna, while its typical itinerary is around eight days longer.

Does the Trekking Company's Location Affect Price?

Company location is particularly interesting when looking at Annapurna Circuit, where there is a large selection of advertised trips.

Nepal-based companies have a median USD price of approximately $1,190. By comparison, the UK-based operators included have a median of around $2,748.

Operators based in India have a median of approximately $1,250, while the US-based trips have a median of around $1,390. Individual trips from operators based in Australia, Ireland and Singapore appear at around $3,120, $3,100 and $2,650 respectively.

However, these international figures are based on far fewer trips than the Nepalese figure, so they should not be interpreted as definitive national market averages.

What they do illustrate is the importance of comparing what is actually included. A locally operated trek and an internationally packaged adventure may follow a similar route while differing substantially in pre-trip support, accommodation, group size, guides, transport and other services.

For Manaslu, Dhaulagiri and Kanchenjunga, most comparable USD-priced trips are offered by Nepal-based operators, making country-to-country comparisons less meaningful.

Trek Profiles: What Makes Each Circuit Different?

Annapurna Circuit: The Classic All-Rounder

The Annapurna Circuit is one of the world's best-known long-distance mountain treks. Rather than simply approaching one mountain, the route travels through dramatically changing environments around the Annapurna massif.

One of its defining challenges is the crossing of Thorong La, a high mountain pass above 5,000 metres. The journey is also known for its variety, moving through villages, valleys and increasingly barren high-altitude terrain.

With a typical duration of around 15 days and a median advertised price of approximately $1,197, Annapurna sits at the more accessible end of this Circuit comparison.

It also has the greatest choice of advertised trips, helping to explain its broad $650–$3,160 price range and wide selection of itinerary lengths.

Manaslu Circuit: A More Remote Alternative

The Manaslu Circuit is often associated with trekkers looking for a quieter and more remote Himalayan journey.

The route circles the Manaslu massif and includes the crossing of the high Larkya La. Compared with the busiest trekking areas of Nepal, its character is more isolated and its logistics can be more involved.

Despite this, its typical duration of 15 days is comparable with Annapurna. Its median advertised price is slightly higher, at approximately $1,397, with published prices ranging from $228 to $3,050.

That makes Manaslu an interesting comparison with Annapurna: the typical time commitment is very similar, but the character of the journey can feel considerably more remote.

Dhaulagiri Circuit: A Serious High-Mountain Journey

The Dhaulagiri Circuit represents a considerable step up in commitment.

With a typical itinerary of around 20 days, it is five days longer than Annapurna or Manaslu. Its median advertised price also jumps to approximately $2,425.

The route is known for its remote high-mountain environment and challenging passes. Infrastructure is much more limited than on Nepal's more established trekking corridors, giving Dhaulagiri a stronger expedition-style character.

This is reflected in the advertised price range of $1,745–$4,500, including the highest maximum advertised price among the four Circuit treks compared.

Kanchenjunga Circuit: The Longest of the Group

At approximately 23 days, the Kanchenjunga Circuit has the longest typical itinerary in the comparison.

Located in far eastern Nepal, the Kanchenjunga region is considerably more remote than the country's busiest trekking areas. Long approaches and more limited infrastructure make the journey a very different proposition from a more established route such as Annapurna.

Its median advertised price of around $2,494 is also the highest of the four Circuit treks, with published prices ranging from approximately $2,100 to $3,950.

Kanchenjunga therefore sits firmly towards the expedition end of the spectrum: longer, more isolated and generally more expensive.

Practical Suitability Guide: Which Circuit Might Suit Your Trip?

The headline figures make the differences easier to understand, but choosing a Circuit trek is also about matching the route to your available time, budget and preferred style of trekking.

This isn't a difficulty ranking. Itinerary design, altitude profile, acclimatisation, season, weather and an individual's trekking experience all matter, so duration or price alone cannot determine whether a particular route is suitable for someone.

Instead, the table provides a practical starting point. Someone with around two weeks available may naturally focus on Annapurna and Manaslu, while a traveller able to commit three weeks or more can consider the more remote Dhaulagiri and Kanchenjunga itineraries. Budget creates another clear dividing line. Annapurna and Manaslu have median advertised prices below $1,400, whereas Dhaulagiri and Kanchenjunga are both above $2,400.

What Should You Compare Beyond Price and Duration?

Two Circuit treks can look very similar on a comparison table while being considerably different on the ground.

Maximum altitude and high-pass crossings are particularly important. A trek's total duration doesn't reveal how many consecutive days are spent at altitude, how quickly the itinerary ascends or how much acclimatisation time is included.

Accommodation is another major difference. More established routes can offer extensive lodge or teahouse networks, while remote circuits may require greater reliance on camping and expedition-style logistics.

The level of trail development and accessibility can also change the experience considerably. Annapurna's popularity has created extensive trekking infrastructure, whereas Dhaulagiri and Kanchenjunga offer a much stronger sense of isolation.

You should also consider permits, guide requirements, internal transport, porter support, meals, group size and emergency arrangements. These factors can help explain why two apparently similar itineraries are offered at very different prices.

So, Which Circuit Experience Suits You?

There is a striking progression across the four Circuit treks.

Annapurna has the largest selection of itineraries and the lowest median advertised USD price, while Manaslu offers a similar typical duration with a more remote character.

For a bigger commitment, Dhaulagiri and Kanchenjunga move firmly towards longer, more expedition-style trekking. Dhaulagiri typically requires around 20 days, while Kanchenjunga extends that to approximately 23 days. Their median advertised prices are also roughly twice that of Annapurna.

Ultimately, the defining feature of a Circuit trek is not simply reaching one famous destination. It is the experience of travelling through and around an entire mountain landscape, crossing passes and moving between distinct valleys and environments along the way.

That means the most useful comparison isn't simply “Which Circuit is cheapest?” It is how much time you have, how remote you want the journey to be, what level of trekking infrastructure you prefer and exactly what is included in the price.

The word “Circuit” might appear in the name of all four treks — but, just like Base Camp treks, the experiences behind that label can be remarkably different.
